For the “information exchange” component of Foodways Madison, Spatulat&Barcode helped to organize the Food Studies Network, a transdisciplinary group of researchers, scholars, and practitioners on campus at the University of Wisconsin and in the broader Madison community.  Our community includes writers, artists, scholars, researchers, chefs, farmers, activists and eaters. With the support of the Center for Humanities Borghesi Mellon Workshops as well funding from the University Lectures Committee and the Art Department’s Visiting Artist Series, we hosted  internationally recognized food artists (both emerging and long-established), activists and public intellectuals, popular food writers and academic researchers. Our guests included Nyamnyam (Ariadna Rodriguez & Inaki Alvarez), Sarah Khan, Kenneth Bailey, Melissa Clark, Raphael Kadushin, Michelle Wildgen, Lindsay Christians, Alicia Rios & Antoni Miralda.  We also showcased our campus resources with tours of food-themed collections housed on campus and through “research forums”--internal symposia in which faculty share work-in-progress.  In more than a dozen public programs in academic year 2016-2017, we brought together faculty, staff, graduate students, undergraduate students and community members for conversations about food systems, food art, migration, security, urban composting, sustainable agriculture, and food’s current and potential roles in community development. The work of this network is ongoing.
